It’s not every day that one gets an mention in ‘The Times‘ but in Wednesday’s edition, I was honoured to see my name mentioned in the obituary for the late Major Ken Mayhew.
I had in a small way, assisted the writer in providing a couple of photographs of Ken when he served with 1 Suffolk during the War, but I had no idea that I would personally get a mention, nor that my book would get a mention also.
I’ve written many small obituaries for Suffolk Regiment soldiers in my capacity as the editor of the magazines for the ‘Friends of The Suffolk Regiment’ but Ken’s was one obituary that I didn’t want to write. I made a start for our next magazine, but ‘The Times’ made an superb effort which reflected just the man Ken was and how many of us who knew them, will remember him.
The Telegraph made a very good effort also, though one personally wishes that they would not keep referring to the Battalion as “1st Suffolk’s” - there was never two of them, and as one old Suffolk officer recalled “Suffolk’s are a breed of sheep!”
